Spotfin Dottyback
Excerpt from PocketExpert Guide: Marine Fishes
Scott W. Michael
Maximum Length: 2.4 in. (6 cm).
Range: Western Pacific.
Minimum
Aquarium Size:
20 gal. (76 L).
Foods & Feeding: Meaty foods, such as marine fish, crustacean flesh, mysid shrimp, and frozen preparations. Feed daily.
Aquarium Suitability: These species are hardy, with almost all individuals readily acclimating to aquarium confines.
Reef Aquarium
Compatibility:
Will eat smaller ornamental shrimps.
Captive Care: Feisty for its size, this fish is made popular by its colors, but can be very aggressive toward other fish species, bullying tankmates of smaller or similar size. Will attack damselfishes, fire gobies, gobies, grammas anthias, and juveniles of larger species; will even harass cleaner shrimps. When kept with larger fishes (e.g., tangs, angelfishes, butterflyfishes), it tends to be much less belligerent. A moderately hardy dottyback, this species is prone to radical color loss (the magenta stripe often fades). Feeding high-quality, vitamin-enriched, and color-enhancing marine foods is advised. Small groups of these dottybacks can be kept in larger reef aquariums that offer profuse cover among the corals and live rock aquascaping.
